Upon returning back to Berlin from Rome, I have a new found appreciation for the city I call my temporary home.
In comparison to Italy, the public transportation here in Berlin is much more convenient and runs on a more regular basis. Throughout my trip in Rome, there were several occasions where myself and my group had been stuck waiting for a bus that showed up over 30 minutes late.
I had also discovered that the underground transportation like trains, are much harder to come by. After having lunch with a professor that is leading the program studying in Rome from my home institution. They had told me that the public transportation is a few and far between. With the reliance on mainly buses, being late is fairly common due to unexpected congestion above ground.
The professor had also informed me about why there is not a lot of underground transportation in Rome. One of the reasons is that every time they try and dig new tunnels for the trains, frequently, they come across ruins or other buried artifacts. Because of this, construction has to stop, due having to follow through with the proper protocols when it comes to disrupting ruins.
Rome also doesn’t have any Ubers, only taxis, which can be quite pricey, due prices that the taxi drivers give people only at the end of the drive. My friends and I had taken a taxi home one night and was charged over €30 for less than a five minute drive. The driver was very rude and did not want to change the price to something more reasonable.
In Berlin, it is easier to call an Uber, especially since you get the price upfront on the app.
I enjoyed seeing the differences between Rome and Berlin because they are two vastly different cities because it helps me to diversify my understanding of European cities.
I hope to travel more to different cities in different countries to compare those experiences to the ones that I am more used to in Berlin.
Overall, I had a fantastic time in Rome and thought that the museums and archaeological sites, were something so amazing I couldn’t prepare myself for.

Here are some photos from my trip in Rome that I found showcases the beauty of the landscape.
