A blog about studying abroad in Berlin!

in bloom

Berlin is starting to feel like a whole new city now that the weather is getting warmer. The roads are slowly getting cleaned up from the leftover grit used on the snow and ice. I’ve noticed a shift in the atmosphere now that the sun is out more frequently and the temperature is increasing. Walking around the city is becoming more enjoyable, and I now take my time when walking to appreciate the city in a way that I couldn’t before.

You see more people sitting outside eating and talking with each other, and even people simply lying on the grass or benches in the sun to be able to relax and enjoy Berlin. Walking down streets, you hear children laughing on playgrounds throughout the neighborhood, something that the city wasn’t experiencing when the weather was colder. It feels like Berlin is in bloom, and I’m starting to see it from a whole new perspective. Public spaces are beginning to feel alive and full of energy, which I appreciate through a new view since I am a student studying here for a few months. My first months in Berlin were cold and gloomy with lots of snow and ice, and although the city was still beautiful throughout it, I found that I couldn’t slow down and appreciate everything around me because I was focused on getting out of the harsh weather.

From an architectural standpoint, all the buildings look so much different, streets being illuminated in ways that they weren’t before, seeing the sunshine down the curving streets and highlighting all the intricate details of the historical buildings. Walking through the city listening to music while taking in everything around me allows me to really connect to the city in a way that I haven’t been able to before. Furthering inspiring me to create beautiful things, being inspired by experience.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve enjoyed sitting outside and water coloring various things, whether it’s landscapes, buildings, or my friends. I’m able to see progression through my drawings that reflect how I see the city.
